Benchmarking

During the past two weeks our students have completed their January benchmarking. Students who are currently being progress monitored, who are not meeting targets or who are changing RtI groups will receive a letter and/or scores next Friday, January 27th. All other students will receive their benchmark data with the second trimester report cards.

Also, Mrs. Nessling our reading specialist will be on a medical emergency leave for the next couple of months. Mrs. Zurales is her substitute. If you have any questions about this situation or benchmarking please feel free to contact me at 630-783-5200.

Once Upon a Time.....

We've all heard these words growing up and have dreams based upon them. I have learned this year that dreams do come true, but we never know how long they are going to last.

Yesterday I put my horse up for sale. Dream in Black and White (McDreamy) was my lifelong dream and the two and a half years I've owned him have been wonderful. Unfortunately this dream has come to an end. I will always be grateful for having this experience and knowing what it's like to fulfill a dream.

Life is a ride - not always fun - but always eventful. Enjoy each dream you achieve to the fullest and treasure it while you have it. This holiday season although I don't feel as Christmasy as usual, I am trying to focus on the dreams of the people around me - Marc, friends and family. I hope you all do the same and are able to fulfill as many of your dreams as possible.

Veteran's Day

Veterans' Day

Veterans' Day is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world and falls on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.) Please take a few moments on Friday to remember all of the veterans who have fought to keep our country and freedoms safe.

I will be out of the office from Wednesday, November 9th - Monday, November 14th. Marc has his follow up cat scan at Children's Memorial on Wednesday to make sure everything is still healing well (his energy level tells me it probably is)!! Bolingbrook Promenade Fundraiser

Don’t forget to support the “Shopping 4 Students” program at The Promenade Bolingbrook mall. Our schools are vying for a share of $10,000 and it’s tied to shopping/dining you already do! Log your receipts at the Mall Office (next to Gymboree) under Prairieview School or turn them in to the office and we will get them logged for you. A BIG THANK YOU

A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Cindy Stewart and her crew for throwing a fabulous Halloween party Friday night. The Ide Spooky Halloween party was a huge success enjoyed by everyone who attended. All of the students looked fabulous in their costumes.

Tonight is the 2nd grade students night to shine!!! Their musical "Squirm" led by Miss Jeannie Wyse will be held tonight at Lakeview Jr. High. All students need to report to the new gym at 6:45 and the show will begin promptly at 7:00. Hope to see you all there.

EARLY DISMISSAL

Thursday, October 27th is an early dismissal day. AM Kindergarten does not attend - PM Kindergarten attends in the morning. Buses begin their pick-up routes in the morning at 8:25. All students are dismissed at noon - pickups are dismissed after buses leave about 12:10.

Next Friday, September 30th will be an early dismissal day. We have a total of six of these days this year to allow for the professional development of our staff. Teachers engage in activities that will benefit all of our students.

Only AM Kindergarten will attend on the 30th (we alternate the days between am and pm). PM Kindergartners DO NOT attend. All students will be dismissed at NOON. Pickups will take place after the buses leave at 12:10.

REMEMBERANCE

September 11, 2011

Sunday will be the 10th anniversary of the 09/11 attacks on New York and Washington. It's hard to believe 10 years have gone by since that frightening day. This is a good time to reflect on the good things we have in our lives and remember those we have lost.

I will never forget being at school that day and worrying about what was going to happen next and how I would keep my students safe if something happened here. I couldn't wait to get home when the day was done and just be with my family, at that time Gary and the dogs. We watched and cried as we saw the days events unfold over and over again. I couldn't imagine how the people who lost their loved ones felt and was overcome with an immense feeling of sorrow and loss of security.

Then one day Mrs. Olsen and I had recess duty and we saw a plane fly overhead. Seeing that simple object somehow brought us hope. We knew that normalcy would return to our world and we would be able to go on. It is that kind of hope that we have to hang unto during difficult times. As we struggle through a trying economy, loss of loved ones and life's curve balls hang on to hope - turn to the people who love and care about you. And be grateful everyday for the positive people and things in your lives.

The school year has begun. I enjoyed seeing so many students and parents today at our Open House. I am looking forward to having another wonderful school year with all of you.

I just want to say THANK YOU again to everyone for your kind words, support and gifts during this difficult summer. Losing Gary was very hard and having Marc go through such a major surgery was difficult. However, all of you have helped in so many ways and I truly appreciate everything! Marc is doing great and is back to being 100%!

I hope you are all having a good summer despite the hot, stormy weather. I just wanted to let you know that my son Marc will be having surgery this Friday, July 29th at Children's Memorial Hospital. This summer doctors discovered that Cerebral Spinal fluid has been dripping out of his nose since he moved in last year. We have taken him to pediatricians, allergists and ENTs since he moved in to find out why his nose constantly runs and have finally gotten our answer.

The surgery is pretty intense and will last 3 - 5 hours and we will be in the hospital 3 - 7 days depending on how the surgery goes. I will be out of the office from July 29th - August 5th and will try to return part time the week of August 8th. I will update these dates if anything changes. Thank you again for all of your support and concern these past few months I truly appreciate it and hope to be able to blog some happy events soon.

10 Years

Please appreciate every moment you have with your family.

Today Gary and I would have been married 10 years. In those 1o years, we navigated our way through the roller coaster called "Life". I became a principal, Gary took over his family business, we lost beloved family members and cried together, we bought a boat (Gary's dream) and a horse (my dream) and began the process of adopting our wonderful son Marc, but nothing prepared me for May 25th. Losing Gary is the hardest thing I have ever been through. Our wedding day was filled with love and wonderful memories (along with a fun fishing theme). Those memories are rushing back today and I am so glad I have them.

Please enjoy this long holiday weekend and make forever memories with your families.

SUMMER IS HERE

Summer is here (well at least today it feels like it). I hope you are all enjoying your time together.

I cannot thank all of you, along with the PTO, for your generosity and support. The lawn service and donations are so appreciated. I am taking next week off to try and get my head around what is happening and take care of a lot of paperwork. First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for their support during this extremely difficult time. Your cards, gifts, hugs, etc mean so much to Marc and I. There are no words to describe how I feel right now, but I can tell you how much I appreciate all of you.

I feel like I have written so many blogs about enjoying time with family and appreciating every moment and once again I have been taught that lesson. I don't understand why this happened and probably never will but I am grateful for the 16 years Gary and I had together. They were full of ups and downs but always full of love.

Please appreciate everyday you have with your loved ones; good and bad. Please enjoy the summer and smile often. Please say I love you when you have the chance.

WOW! May has arrived and it seems like spring has come with it. The sun has been out and the flowers are blooming after all that April dreariness.

This week the teacher's enjoyed theTeacher Appreciation gifts and luncheons from all of you! Thank you for taking the time to appreciate the talented and caring staff of Elizabeth Ide!

Unfortunately, I had a family emergency this week that kept me out of the festivities. Marc was hospitalized but things are looking up and I can't wait to return next week;at least I didn't put on the traditional 5 pounds that comes with those fabulous lunches!

I hope all moms have a wonderful Mother's Day on Sunday! Take time to celebrate being a mom and enjoy each and every moment. My first Mother's Day is not what I expected but I am so happy to be having one I don't care where we celebrate!

SPRING IS IN THE AIR

Spring is here - which means we can fluctuate 30 degrees from day to day!!! We will be going out for recess most days so please dress your students according to the weather. Don't pack those winter clothes away yet!

Thursday, April 21st is an early dismissal day. All students are released at 12:00. Pick-ups are at 12:10. ONLY PM Kindergarten students are to attend - AM students do not have school that day!

Thursday, April 28th will be our Spring Open House and Book Fair from 6:30 - 8:00. Please come and see all of the projects your students have been working on. They are so proud to show it off!

COLLECTION FOR JAPAN

The response to the Helping Japan coin donation was tremendous! While collecting the coins over a 2-week period, WE RAISED $1,141.93. The students, parents, and teachers at Elizabeth Ide really contributed to raising the awareness about the importance of helping the people of Japan. Thank you to Mrs. Tran for organizing this terrific project. Our donation will be donated directly to the Red Cross organization.

All of our students were so concerned and demonstrated great generosity. One of our first grade students emptied her piggy bank of $90.00 in gold dollars to help people who were really in need! She earned a very special PAW!

Thank you for supporting our Character Counts program mission to help the people of Japan!! I hope you all have a wonderful spring break and enjoy your time together!

MAP Testing Information Nights

Ide 2nd Grade Parents

Prior to conference week, 2nd grade parents received their students MAP test scores along with an explanatory letter. On March 15th, we have a parent session scheduled to help you better understand the student report and allow time for questions. BRING YOUR CHILD’S REPORT TO THE MEETING SO YOU CAN REFER TO THE DOCUMENT DURING THE PRESENTATION. Parents who want more information on MAP testing only need to attend ONE of the following scheduled meetings:

Saturday was a beautiful night for a ball!!! The Snowflake Ball was a huge success and fun was had by all who attended. The gym was transformed into a winter wonderland thanks to Mrs. Huang and her many volunteers (including her husband and Mr. Singh our picture takers).

What's going on?........

First and foremost, thank you to all of the moms who helped with our Valentine Day parties. They were a huge success and enjoyed by all!!!!

Second, I will be out of the office Thursday the 17th, Friday the 18th and Tuesday the 22nd. My foster son (hopefully soon I can just write son) is having his tonsils and adnoids out so he will be home recuperating with mom. I will be calling in and checking emails so please leave messages if you need me.

Third, there is NO SCHOOL, Monday, February 21st due to President's Day. I hope you all have a wonderful extended weekend - find some time for some FAMILY FUN!!!

PBIS KICK-OFF WAS A SUCCESS

This week our students were introduced to our PBIS expectations:

The staff took the students through 12 stations to explain how to meet these expectations in different settings such as the classroom, hallway, bus, and bathroom. The staff and students role played different activities at each station and had a wonderful time. To culminate the week our PTO provided us with a fabulous juggling assembly that was enjoyed by all!!!!

Elizabeth Ide will be implementing an approach to discipline called PBIS. This is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.We will begin by establishing clear expectations for behavior that will be taught, modeled, and reinforced across all settings and by all staff. Our week will culminate with a juggling celebration assembly provided by our wonderful PTO.

Oh No! That crazy time of year is back again - this is all I hear people saying. Oh yes, the complaints about the cold weather have begun too! First and foremost, we live in Chicago, it is going to get cold in the winter - so let's think of the nice things that accompany cold weather.

1) There is no humidity!!!!! (Remember - It's not the heat, it's the humidity)

2) The snow makes everything look frosted. (Who doesn't like frosting?)

3) Sleds and ice skates are being used instead of just sitting in a closet and kids are smiling!!!

Yes this time is busy but think of the good things the holiday season brings.

1) Yummy treats we only get once a year (mmmmm those Cookie Calories).

2) Kids smiling in wonder at Santa.

3) People helping others in need and showing their caring ways.

Remember to always look for the positive in things; by doing this now the weather and the season will just seem better!! I hope you all take some time to relax, enjoy your families and have a wonderful holiday.

Thanksgiving Day is one of those joyous events we celebrate with lots of love and gratitude. Be thankful for the time spent with family (even if it's a little stressful). END OF TRIMESTER

On Friday, November 12th the first trimester ended. The staff and students have worked diligently these past three months building upon skills learned last year. Report Cards will be sent home Tuesday, November 23rd to show the strengths, as well as areas of concern, for your children. Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place the week of November 30th. Teachers have sent home conference reminder slips; please make sure you send them back to confirm your appointment. We look forward to the second trimester and our continued work together for the benefit of our students!

NEW STANDARDIZED TESTING BEGINS AT IDE

MAP TESTING

MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) is a new test to District 66 this year and will replace the IOWA test which was given in years past. We will give students MAP tests to determine their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of math, reading and language arts. The test is taken on the computer.

MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. With the use of MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child’s growth. Over the next few weeks, your child will spend a total of about two to three hours completing these tests. Each school year, students in grades 2-8 take the tests in fall and again in the spring. This fall the 2nd grade test is being piloted. We are administering the test at this time to familiarize the students with the testing procedures therefore the results will not be sent home. The spring testing results will be sent home with the final report card.

We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. CHARACTER COUNTS AT ELIZABETH IDE

PBIS

Later this year, Elizabeth Ide will be implementing an approach to discipline called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.

As a Response to Intervention model, PBIS applies a three-tiered system of support, and a problem-solving process to enhance the capacity of schools to effectively educate all students.
Data-based decision-making aligns curricular instruction and behavioral supports to student and staff needs. Schools applying PBIS begin by establishing clear expectations for behavior that are taught, modeled, and reinforced across all settings and by all staff.

While we are being trained to implement this program, we will continue our Positive PAWS (Positive Amazing Wonderful Students) Program. Our students can earn pawprints for demonstrating the Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship) anytime during the school day. The paws are brought down to the office and six lucky students are drawn each month to win a certificate and other "pawsitive" items. One student each month wins a Character Counts t-shirt or poster. All of the paws are hung on the Positive PAWS bulletin board at the end of the month.

RtI Begins Again

RTI

RtI will begin for our first graders on Monday, Sept. 13th and on Monday, Sept. 20th for our second graders. Letters went home today stating who your child's reading teacher will be. Our entire teaching staff works together to make this education initiative as productive as possible for our students. Therefore, your student may have a classroom teacher or one of our specialists as their reading teacher. Who the teacher is does not reflect on your child's abilities, but enables us to have teachers work with smaller groups of students to enhance their educational experience at Elizabeth Ide. Kindergarten RtI will begin after the first trimester. I can't believe this will be day 3 of the school year - the summer just flew by. I really enjoy hearing the children's voices again, it gets pretty lonely in the summer!!

During the Open House I heard many positive comments about the building renovation, I am so glad that everyone is enjoying the new look. Please know that my office door (and ears) are always open if you need anything. I am looking forward to working with our new and returning families this year. Welcome back and let the fun begin!

This summer has been very busy and filled with unexpected (but) happy surprises.

The Ide renovation is coming along nicely and the school looks terrific. I cannot wait for our Open House so everyone can see the changes - for a sneak peek check out Dr. Tiede's blog for pictures :)

The Hansen household has increased by one! Marc a beautiful and wonderful 3 year old boy has moved in and filled our home with love and happiness. I have been able to introduce him to many Ide families as we've been out and about in the neighborhood.

I hope all of you are having a terrific summer and enjoying time with family and friends.

I can't believe we are at the end of another school year. I have enjoyed working with all of you and your children this year. For those of you going on to Prairieview I wish you the best of luck and hope you'll come back and visit us here at Ide; especially since we'll be renovating the building this summer.

The renovations will begin immediately after school ends on Wednesday, June 2nd and should be completed by mid-August (keep your fingers crossed)!!! If you need any assistance during the month of June the office will be relocated to Prairieview (630) 783-5100. Once we are back at Ide we'll send out an email informing all of you.

When everything is complete I will be posting some before and after pictures so that everyone can view and enjoy the changes. I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing summer!!!!!

UNIQUE ASSEMBLY

We are so lucky to have such wonderful, supportive and generous members of the Elizabeth Ide PTO. They spend so many hours helping the staff and students enrich our educational and social programs. Last Friday, the PTO treated the students to a "Unique Assembly". At this assembly students were put into teams and asked questions from our very own curriculum, that's what makes it unique :), questions about current events and pop culture, as well as having to perform some physical challenges. It was very exciting and the students absolutely enjoyed themselves.

TEACHER APPRECIATION

This week the PTO has supplied wonderful lunches for the staff of our school for teacher appreciation. A BIG Thank You goes out to everyone who sent in the delectable goodies. We have truly enjoyed each and every lunch and have gained at least 5 pounds apiece!

APRIL POSITIVE PAWS

Friday, May 7th the PTO has scheduled an Author Assembly for the students. This author writes books in a series called USA Dogs. He has written about racing greyhounds, therapy dogs and search and rescue dogs. He will be bringing his Greyhound, Honey, with for the assembly. As a special treat he has offered to eat lunch with the students to discuss his books. To choose the students, we picked 16 PAWS instead of 6 for the month of April and those students will get to eat lunch with the author.

DISTRICT 66 GENEROSITY

Two events have taken place this past month that really show the generosity of our district.

The district PTO held their annual On-Line auction which brought in a whopping $8,300.oo! This money supplements the technology we are able to bring our students. A big thank you goes out to Jill Hegarty and Cheryl Ferreri for gathering all of the fantastic auction items and running the auction with the help of our technology director Kathy Kucera.

The response to the Adopt-A-Rainforest coin donation was tremendous! While collecting the coins over a week period, WE RAISED $293.58!! The students, parents, and teachers at Elizabeth Ide really contributed to raising the awareness about the importance of rainforests. Our donation will be used for a conservation project in either Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, or Nicaragua. I have asked the Rainforest Alliance to allocate our donation to the neediest project. Thank you for supporting our Character Counts program and Earth Day 2010!

WEARING OF THE GREEN

WHY DO WE WEAR GREEN ON ST. PATRICK'S DAY

Originally the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue, not,in fact, green. However over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick's day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick's Day as early as the 17th century. He is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. Then in 1798 in hopes of making a political statement Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching attention with their unusual fashion gimmick. The phrase "the wearing of the green", meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothing, derives from the song of the same name. It began as a purely Christian holiday and became an official feast day in the early 1600s. However, it has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland's culture.

In honor of this Irish holiday, let's all try to wear green on March 17th!!!!

The Snowflake Ball

Saturday was a beautiful night for a ball!!! The Snowflake Ball was a huge success thanks to several moms who pitched in to make sure this event was not cancelled. The gym was transformed into a winter wonderland thanks to Mrs. Prazak, Mrs. Mojica, Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Qualizza and Mrs. Metherd along with many other volunteers. On Thursday, February 18th I was bailed out of jail for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. My main goal was to raise $800.00, which is enough to send a child to MDA summer camp. After all was said and done I raised $920.00. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this wonderful cause. Zach, our sheriff for the day, was very grateful and thoroughly enjoyed the day!

I can't believe today is the first day of February - where did January go? Tomorrow the Groundhog will let us know how long winter will last and our state primaries will be in full swing.

In January, we collected funds to help the survivors of the terrible earthquake in Haiti. Thanks to our students, parents and staff we were able to send $1,513.97 to the Food for the Poor organization. Thank you for your generosity and caring support.

This month I have been asked to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association by being taken to jail. Yes many of you may want to leave me there, but I need help being bailed out. I agreed to partake in this fundraiser due to the fact that this disease can affect anyone at anytime and does affect some of our district 66 families. Every year I hear people talking about what they want for Christmas. This year I didn't really want anything; this summer my lifelong Christmas wish of owning a horse came true and I am so happy and grateful for everything I have I truly didn't want anything for Christmas. My life always felt very complete except for one thing and yesterday that dream came true; after a year's worth of hard work, Gary and I received our fostering/adoption license from the state of Illinois - I have never been so happy. We could receive a phone call at any time that a little one is moving in - what a change in life style - we don't get nine months to prepare! So don't be surprised if you see me around town with a little one in tow!!!! I hope all of your Christmas wishes and dreams come true this year and that you all have a wonderful and relaxing holiday break!

I'd like to thank all of the parents and staff for a wonderful week full of conferences. Working together will strengthen your students'/child's educational experience. I hope you all enjoyed the three day weekend and are ready for the run to the holidays.

There will be many friend, family and social events to go to as well as lots of last minute shopping and running around. Just remember to breathe and take time to relax. Look at the faces of the children sitting on Santa's lap (not how long the line is). Imagine a loved one's face when they open the perfect gift (instead of stressing about a parking space). Remember the love this season represents and share that with your family, friends and loved ones!

IPA CONFERENCE

When you are young, you think that once you are done with school you will know everything! However, as an adult you realize that life is a continuous learning journey. At the beginning of this week, I attended the Illinois Principal Association conference in Peoria. Each session I attended gave me new ideas and perspectives to implement at Elizabeth Ide. I enjoyed sharing the weekend with my colleagues and bouncing ideas off of peers. The school ran smoothly in my absence and I thank my staff for being so wonderful!!!

GYM NIGHT

Last Friday, October 16th, Ide had Gym Night to raise funds for our Character Counts/Positive PAWS program. Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Tran and many staff members and parents we raised $700.00. Thank you to all of you who participated in this wonderful evening!

Tomorrow, Friday, October 23rd we will have the Halloween Fun Night from 6:30 - 8:30. There are many families attending this event so please take advantage of our shuttle bus service from Prairieview. I will see many of you tomorrow for a "ghoulish" time!

Miss Terri Smeltzer, the art teacher at PV and Ide, has a very busy weekend ahead of her. She is one of thousands of people running in the Chicago Marathon. Two years ago she tried surfing for the first time in Hawaii and now this! If anyone is going to the race be on the lookout for #13123 wearing a hot pink skull or stocking cap with a crocheted pink or black flower on it! This is Terri's first marathon and she has been training extremely hard; we are all very proud of her!!!!

Positive PAWS

This year Elizabeth Ide is continuing its Positive PAWS (Positive Amazing Wonderful Students) program. Our students can earn pawprints for demonstrating the Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship) anytime during the school day. The paws are brought down to the office and six lucky students are drawn each month to win a certificate and other "pawsitive" items. One student each month wins a Character Counts t-shirt. All of the paws are hung on the Positive PAWS bulletin board at the end of the month.

In my September monthly visits to the classrooms, I read books that taught lessons about good character. We discussed whether or not we would give the characters paws and why. Students did a wonderful job explaining how to be kids of character.

We've also begun a "Paws-itive Behavior" pledge that all of the students will say after The Pledge of Allegiance.

Reading is High Priority for Elizabeth Ide students

Thirty students from Elizabeth Ide participated in the "Be Creative: Read at Your Library" summer reading program at the Indian Prairie Public Library. Some of these students read for over 70 hours! Good job everyone.

Last night we held our book fair / ice cream social. The students enjoyed eating their ice cream, but I think they enjoyed picking out their own books even more! Many of them couldn't wait to show my the books they purchased and were eager to go home to read. I'd like to thank everyone who attended and supported our PTO and a GREAT BIG thank you to all of you who volunteered to work this event! We couldn't have done it without you.

RtI BEGINS

On Monday, September 14th RtI will begin for our first and second graders. Letters went home today stating who your child's reading teacher will be. Our entire teaching staff works together to make this education initiative as productive as possible for our students. Therefore, your student may have a classroom teacher or one of our specialists as their reading teacher. Who the teacher is does not reflect on your child's abilities, but enables us to have teachers work with smaller groups of students to enhance the educational experience at Elizabeth Ide. Kindergarten RtI will begin on Wednesday, September 23rd and the teacher letters will be sent home next week. Another year has gone by! During this year, we implemented a new learning initiative (RtI) and watched our students grow both academically and physically. As we look to next year, Ide will be going through even more changes. Mrs. Cornfield will be joining the second grade team and sharing her knowledge and expertise with them. Mrs. Beseth will be moving to PV and joining fourth grade. We will miss her at Elizabeth Ide, but we know that the fourth grade students are very lucky to be getting her.

Thank you again for all of your support throughout this year. My second year is behind me (whew) and I am looking forward to year three. They say "the third is the charm" so next year should be wonderful! I hope you all have an enjoyable and relaxing summer!

Picnic

Last Friday's picnic was a huge success due to all of the volunteers who shared their time with our students. All of the children enjoyed the day thanks to you!

Principals for the Day

Maddelena and Marina were principals for a day on Monday, June 1st. Maddelena happily greeted students as they entered the building, talked to the bus drivers as they enjoyed their special breakfast, delivered important papers to teachers, announced the May Positive PAWS winners and caught up on current events.

Marina joined us at lunchtime and helped shred papers, copied important documents and hosted a project in Mrs. Amish's room. They were very hard workers and have promising futures ahead!

The Chicago Bears presented the most informative, hands-on, educational school health show in the NFL and Chicagoland to Elizabeth Ide students today! First and Goal was created by Staley Da Bear, the teams official mascot, to educate today’s youth about the benefits of living a healthy life. Staley and his MC will jumpstart your child’s desire to begin living a smarter and healthier life by combining education, comedy and a high energy show!

The Message: How to score a touchdown for a healthy life!

A one hour fun-filled school program teaching elementary students the 4 downs to scoring a healthy touchdown in the game of life. The 4 downs are as follows:

DON''T GIVE UP YOUR DREAMS

When we're growing up, I think we all visualize what our life will become. We'll be famous movie stars, singers, firemen, doctors, rich, etc. Sometimes that vision doesn't coincide with what happens and we give up on our dreams. When I was younger I wanted to be on the Olympic Equestrian team, I took lessons until I was about 13 and the financial reality of horseback riding took over and I had to stop. 2 years ago I started riding again and this past weekend was in a horseshow for the second time in 28 years. I was nervous but just tried my best and received 2 first place ribbons and 1 second place ribbon. I was overwhelmed and could not believe it. This accomplishment made me realize that it is never to late to rekindle some of your dreams. If I can do it anyone can! I may never be in the Olympics but I can still enjoy competitive riding.

As your children grow up, encourage their dreams as much as you can. If you have something you want to try for the first time or take up again - Go For It!!! Show them that anything is possible!

MANY RAINY DAYS

At this time of the year we experience many rainy days and varied temperatures. Unfortunately, many times this means indoor recess. The news is inundating us with information about "Swine Flu". While this is a new strain of flu, it is still the flu. You and your child can take the following precautions to try and prevent illness.

1) Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw it away after use.

2) Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol based hand cleaners are also effective.

3) Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

4) Try to avoid contact with sick people.

5) If you do get sick, the CDC recommends that you stay home from work, school and public gatherings to prevent infecting others and to help yourself get better.

Teachers have reiterated good hygiene habits with their students. The best thing we all can do is to remain calm, but alert to what we can do to prevent illness. Thank you and have a good week!

Last Thursday, many of you came and visited our school for the Spring Open House and Book Fair. The staff worked hard decorating their rooms and creating many projects, while students completed work to show off to their parents. A good time was had by all. The Book Fair would not have been possible without many volunteers - a BIG THANK YOU - goes to all of you.

DISTRICT FUNDRAISER

Wow! I didn't know our moms knew how to dance so well! The Friday night Fundraiser at Cornerstone's was a complete success. From the fantastic music provided by the Paul Windsor Orchestra to the terrific prizes the night was filled with fun! Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this evening possible.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER MUSICAL TEA

Sunday was the Ide musical tea. This event provided moms, daughters, aunts, and grandmas with food, tea, and fun. The girls walked the runway like top models and danced the day away. All of those who attended really enjoyed themselves. The volunteers for this event went above and beyond the call of duty and the day was beautiful - THANK YOU!! Also, thank you for the rose plant and the kind words you said to me. I truly enjoy sharing my days with your children and you!

THE SCIENCE DETECTIVE COMES TO IDE

Today, thanks to our wonderful PTO, our students were treated to a fun and educational assembly. "The Science Detective" came to our school today and helped our students solve scientific mysteries and questions. Students learned about the states of water, the properties of air and gravity during these interactive sessions.

Spring is definitely in the air today. I hope those of you who celebrate Easter have a wonderful holiday. Our first graders have begun their "infamous" chick unit, which brings to mind eggs - and at this time of year Easter eggs. Do you know where this tradition came from?

The Easter Egg predates the Christian holiday of Easter. The exchange of eggs in the springtime is a custom that was centuries old when Easter was first celebrated by Christians.
From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of rebirth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were a peasant, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers. Today, children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with the modern version of real Easter eggs -- those made of plastic or chocolate candy.

So over this long weekend celebrate the season of rebirth (the blooming of flowers, the budding of trees) and take some time to relax with your family!!!

This morning there was an incident on one of our buses that caused an injury to a student which required a trip to the hospital and some stitches. The injury was caused by a number of students not following the district bus safety rules and not listening to the bus driver. Please reiterate bus safety to your children by reviewing the rules listed below.

Students must sit in their assigned seat at all times.

Students will remain seated at all times.

Students may not change seats once they board the bus.

Students will obey the bus driver at all times.

Students will keep all limbs and head inside the bus.

Students may talk to those around them but may not shout, scream or sing on the bus.

Students will be courteous and respectful to other students on the bus.

Students may not engage in conduct that interferes with the safe operation of the bus.

No food or drink on the bus.

The Elizabeth Ide PTO treated us to a wonderful assembly today - "Ease the Tease". This assembly, put on by Imagination Theater of Chicago, taught the students some wonderful ways to handle being teased, as well as showing how teasing hurts others. They role played incidents that frequently occur on the bus, at recess, in the lunchroom and even took ideas from our students. They gave our students 8 ways to handle someone teasing them and I have outlined them below.

1) IGNORE- Ignore the tease and walk away

2) TAKE IT AS A COMPLIMENT - Say "Thanks!" and walk away.

3) ANSWER WITH A COMPLIMENT - Wow! You're good at that!

4) AGREE WITH THE FACTS - Yes I am bad at basketball.

5) USE AN "I" MESSAGE - I feel sad when you tease me.

6) SAY "SO" - Say so without emotion or anger.

7) USE SELF-TALK - Think "I know I'm being teased"; "I'm not going to let the teaser know I'm upset"; "I'm smart and I can handle this."

SNOWFLAKE BALL

Saturday night the gym was transformed into a magical, snowy place for the annual Snowflake Ball. The girls looked very beautiful in their dresses and the boys were handsome in their outfits. A big thank you to all of the volunteers especially Mrs. Tumbali who chaired the event and made the night possible. Also, thank you to Mrs. Amish, Mrs. Hull and Miss Smeltzer for coming out and sharing the evening with us.

Reading Classroom Changes

RtI Update

Last week we completed our winter reading benchmarking and this week the data was reviewed and analyzed. Beginning Tuesday, January 20th many students will be changing reading classrooms. If your child is changing rooms, a letter is being sent home with them today. Students needing more interventions will receive two letters. The changes are based on the progress and/or needs of the students. As the work becomes more difficult, there are students who need extra interventions and small group instruction to help them comprehend the new strategies being taught. Other students have made enough progress to stop receiving interventions. However, all students are receiving the same curriculum and have the same reading expectations. In each grade level, the weekly newsletters explain what will be worked on in reading and language arts and that is what you should focus on at home. Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns.

I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing break. Our break started early due to the snow day on Friday, December 19th. Fortunately, the students got to enjoy a day playing in the snow; unfortunately we did miss our holiday parties. We will not be rescheduling the parties. The midyear benchmarking and other curriculum issues this week prevent us from doing so. I'm sure the students all had a wonderful holiday season filled with fun and treats and they can all look forward to our Valentine Day parties in February! Thank you for your understanding.

Happy Holidays

Winter has blown in with a bang! Below zero temperatures, piles of snow and gusty winds have been an integral part of the last few days. While I've been out running errands and shopping, I haven't noticed the cold, but the warmth. The warmth of children's smiling faces, the warmth of people giving (Toys for Tots, Food pantry workers, church donations) and the warmth of families spending time together. It is so easy to get overwhelmed by what needs to be done before we can enjoy the holidays but try to focus on why you're doing these things. Why do we run around looking for the perfect gift? Why do we try to bake dozens upon dozens of delicious cookies in a matter of hours? We do it out of love - love for our family and friends. Keep that as your focus of the holiday season and you too will feel the warmth!

This week is a very busy week here at Elizabeth Ide

2nd Graders are travelling around the world during reading learning about the different ways other countries celebrate the holidays. On Thursday, they are going to share goodwill with the residents of the Fairview Baptist Home. Friday, our 1st graders will be learning how to make paper to go along with their recycling unit. While the kindergartners will be hunting for the missing gingerbread man! Oh no where can he be!

Friday all the classrooms will be treated to holiday parties. Thank you volunteers for always making these days so special for our students. I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing holiday break!

A BUSY WEEK

Conference Week

This week we held parent-teacher conferences. Parents and teachers were able to meet and discuss their children/students. This can often be any eye-opening experience. Parents often learn things about their children that they were unaware of; quiet children at home can be the chatty students in a classroom or show musical aptitude in the music room! Teachers see their students in a different light and may remember what is was like to sit on the other side of the table. Overall the week went well and I hope you all had a positive experience.

Recess

It's that time of year when we have to ask will recess be inside or outside? If the temperature outside is 20 degrees or lower (including wind chill) we will stay inside. All students will go outside, unless we have a doctor's note on file stating the student needs to stay in. When snow is on the ground, students need snow pants and boots to go up to the playground. Those studentswithout these items will only be allowed to play on the blacktop so please send your child prepared for outside recess.

Who's Bringing the Pumpkin Pie?

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest pumpkin pie ever baked weighed 2,020 pounds and measured just over 12 feet long. It was baked on October 8, 2005 by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio, and included 900 pounds of pumpkin, 62 gallons of evaporated milk, 155 dozen eggs, 300 pounds of sugar, 3.5 pounds of salt, 7 pounds of cinnamon, 2 pounds of pumpkin spice and 250 pounds of crust. Wow - What a Pie!!!!! If you make one this big please feel free to share with the office!!!!

What is Veteran's Day

Veterans Day originally was held every November 11th, and though it typically falls on this day, officially the holiday is now observed on the weekday that falls closest to November 11th every year. It was first incorporated by President Wilson as Armistice Day in 1919. Other countries today also still recognize November 11th as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in honor of the Armistice treaty which ended WWI.

It was in 1938 that Armistice Day was enacted as an official American holiday. But eventually after WWII, citizens felt that the veterans of all wars should be recognized, not just those of WWI. So in 1954 Congress changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In America, the holiday now celebrates the approximate 2.9 million U.S. veterans with parades and ceremonies among other events.

FACTS ABOUT HEAD LICE

The bane of many parents, the head louse is a tiny, wingless parasitic insect that lives among human hairs and feeds on extremely small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. Although they may sound gross, lice (the plural of louse) are a very common problem, especially for kids ages 3 years to 12 years (girls more often than boys). Lice aren't dangerous and they don't spread disease, but they are contagious and can just be downright annoying.

In Center Cass District 66 many procedures are in place when an incident occurs. These procedures go above and beyond what the county and state health departments require for school districts. These procedures are listed below:

When a parent notifies the school that a child has lice we check the classmates of that child to insure that the lice have not spread to other students.
If a child is found to have lice at school, the child is sent home immediately with instructions on how to eliminate the lice. Once the child has been treated he/she may return to school.
Mrs. Heckman, our school nurse, checks all students who have been treated for lice after seven days to insure that they are free of lice.
When a child is confirmed to have lice in school, the classroom is vacuumed and desks and chairs cleaned in the event that a louse has jumped off the infected child.

Mrs. Heckman remains current on all new treatments and preventative measures available and implements them accordingly. We need parents to do the same. Please tell your students not to share combs, brushes, hats, headbands, etc. with other students. The IPA - Building Blocks of Educational Leadership

I have been privileged to attend the IL Principals Association 37th Annual Principals Professional Conference held in Peoria, IL October 5 - 7, 2008. Dr. Adolf Brown III, an international speaker and trainer from Virginia, keynoted the opening session on Monday titled "Ahead of the Curve - Closing the Achievement Gap." Dr. Christopher Koch, IL State Superintendent of Schools, updated attendees on the state of education in IL at the Second General Session. The Third General Session was extremely motivating; Michael Dorn a nationally renowned speaker from Georgia presented "School Safety Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." He really opened my eyes to the large and important role I play in my students' lives. I also attended small group sessions focusing on staff development, issues facing new principals and RtI.

The IL Principals Association is a 4300 member professional organization representing elementary, middle and secondary principals, assistant principals and deans throughout Illinois. The Mission of the IPA is to advance learning through effective educational leadership. I am proud to be a member of this organization.

Where did September go? The beginning of the school year went by quickly and smoothly. RtI is up and running and the students and staff are doing an excellent job with all of the changes. The kindergartners are happy to be in school, the first graders are used to being here all day and the second graders are enjoying being the "big" kids.

School Picnic was Rained Out, but not Washed Up

It rained on our picnic, but not on our fun! Some of the games were able to go outside for a little while, but most of the day was spent in the school between the gym, IMC and the 1st/2nd grade open areas. The students had a wonderful time thanks to all of our volunteers who made the day so special!!!

Our Kindergartners Graduated

Our kindergartners graduated to first grade and full day. There was much excitement as they received their diplomas and told what they wanted to be when they grow up. Everyone had a wonderful day!

LAST DAY of 2007-2008

Today was the last day - we all survived. Both students and teachers are ready for a much needed break to refresh for the Fall. I hope you all have a fun and relaxing summer!

Jim Gill Visits Kindergarten

Our kindergarten classrooms received a special treat today when Jim Gill visited our school. Below is information about Jim and his program:

Jim Gill is, by training, a child development specialist with a Master’s Degree from the Erikson Institute of Chicago. He speaks to early childhood educators, child care providers, and children’s librarians at conferences throughout the country about the value of play, in general, and the many connections between music play and literacy.

This Thursday, May 22nd there will be a Parent Link for all Elizabeth Ide and Prairieview parents at Prairieview at 7:00. This link will focus on how to continue working on your student's academic skills over the summer. Mrs. Kucera, the district technology director, will be demonstrating how to use the district webpage as a link to many academic websites suggested by teachers. Mrs. Schultz and myself have put together lists of summer reading books based on suggestions from teachers and the Illinois Reading Council. I hope many of you will be able to attend this informative evening.

Elizabeth Ide Character Counts Assembly

Today the PTO treated us to a wonderful assembly by Rick Kelly about Character Counts and Reading. The kids learned about sharing, being fair, helping others and being responsible through song and dance. A good time was had by all. Check-in with the Indian Prairie Library, Rick is featured in their summer reading program!!!!!

RTI Update

I have written about RtI (Response to Intervention) in previous blogs, but since the end of the year is approaching and many of us our already thinking of next year I thought I would blog about it again. RtI is a new federal law with implications for general education as well as special education. Response to Intervention identifies and provides high quality instruction and research based interventions matched to student needs. RtI measures the rate of improvement over time to make important educational decisions. RtI uses ongoing student performance data to determine if an intervention is working. If the intervention is not working a different strategy is implemented in a timely manner. RtI uses a 3 tiered approach to problem solving. At the beginning of the year all students are screened, which gives us an indication of where each student is compared to their peers and which students need an intervention. The students move up the 3 tiers by working through different levels of interventions. RtI is an overall integrated system of educational service delivery. RtI is not an eligibility system or a way to place students in special education. It is a system that allows each student to receive the educational interventions needed to succeed.

We have formed committees in all three buildings this year who have attended training offered through SASED/ASPIRE throughout the year. We will begin to implement the RtI process next year and more will be explained in next week's blog. Thanks for reading!

Teacher Appreciation Week was Wonderful!!!

Thank you PTO and all of the moms who sent in the delicious food for the lunches last week. Everyone truly enjoyed them and it was nice not to have to think about what to bring for lunch!

I hope you all had a wondeful Mother's Day weekend despite the rainy, windy, chilly weather. Here's a little background on Mother's Day:

Mother's Day is celebrated to honor all mothers and express gratitude for the hardships they bear in bringing up a child. Most countries including US, Australia, Canada and India celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May. Mother Day came into being due to the efforts made by Ms Julia Ward Howe and Ms Anna Jarvis. The Resolution for having a dedicated 'Mother's Day was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people across the world have been celebrating Mothers Day with joy and devotion.
